Sri Lanka's Most Exciting Safari

Yala National Park lies on the dry south-east coast, where scrub jungle, rocky outcrops, lagoons and beaches meet. It is one of the best places in the world to see leopards in the wild, and elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and more than 200 kinds of birds live here too.

On this private safari the jeep is just for your group. Your tracker-driver reads tracks and listens for alarm calls from deer and monkeys, and takes you away from the crowds where possible. Choose a morning, afternoon or full-day drive to suit your plans.

The Top Predator

Sri Lankan Leopard

Sri Lanka's leopard is its own subspecies. With no tigers or lions to compete with, it is often seen in daylight — lying on rocks or walking along the tracks.

Most active early morning and late afternoon

Gentle Giants

Asian Elephant

Small family groups and lone bulls feed on the grass near water holes and lagoons, especially later in the day.

Rare Sighting

Sloth Bear

A shaggy black bear that feeds on termites and fruit. It is shy, so a sighting is a real bonus.

Planning Tip

Which Part of Yala?

Yala is divided into blocks. Most safaris use Block 1, entered at Palatupana Gate, because it has the most leopard sightings — and so also the most jeeps.

If you prefer fewer vehicles, ask about entering from the Katagamuwa side or visiting nearby Bundala National Park, a wetland famous for water birds. Your driver will suggest what works best on the day.
