About This Journey

Sri Lanka's hill country is a different island from the beaches below — cool mornings, waterfalls, and tea bushes clipped into terraces across every slope. This private tour climbs gradually from Kandy into Nuwara Eliya, the highest town on the island, and on to Ella.

Along the way you'll walk the high plateau of Horton Plains to World's End, see how Ceylon tea is made, and ride the celebrated hill-country railway while your driver takes your luggage ahead by road. The pace leaves room for viewpoints, tea breaks and changes of plan.

The Story of Ceylon Tea

From Leaf to Cup

Coffee was the first big crop in these hills, but when a disease wiped it out in the 1870s, planters turned to tea. The first commercial tea estate was planted at Loolecondera, near Kandy, in 1867.

Today 'Ceylon tea' is famous worldwide. Pluckers pick just two leaves and a bud by hand, and the leaf is withered, rolled, dried and graded the same day. On this tour you visit a working factory and taste the result.

Best overall: January to April for clear mountain views. The hills are beautiful all year — just pack a rain jacket outside the dry season.
