About This Journey

Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle holds more than two thousand years of history within a few hours' drive. This private tour links its great sites in a natural order — beginning in Anuradhapura, the island's first royal capital, then moving to the rock fortress of Sigiriya and the medieval city of Polonnaruwa.

The final day takes in the painted caves of Dambulla and a spice garden on the road south, before arriving in Kandy for the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Five of the sites on this route are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and your driver-guide sets the pace so the heat and the crowds never get the better of the day.

First Royal Capital

Sri Lanka's capital for well over a thousand years, filled with giant stupas, monasteries and ancient reservoirs. It is still an active pilgrimage city.

The Lion Rock

Medieval Capital

Ancient City of Polonnaruwa

The royal capital from the 11th to 13th centuries. Its palaces, temples and statues are compact and easy to explore by car or bicycle.

The last royal capital of Sri Lanka, built around a lake. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is the country's most important Buddhist shrine.

Day 1 · Airport → Anuradhapura

Into the First Kingdom

🚗 Approx. 4 h drive🛏️ Anuradhapura

Your driver-guide meets you at Bandaranaike International Airport (or your Colombo hotel) and heads north to Anuradhapura. After time to settle in, the late afternoon — when the stone is cooler underfoot — is spent in the Sacred City.

Rock Temples & a Sunset Climb

A final morning in Anuradhapura before the drive to Sigiriya, with the afternoon kept light ahead of a late climb.

Day 3 · Sigiriya & Polonnaruwa

The Lion Rock & a Medieval Capital

An early start beats the heat on Sigiriya's stairways. After lunch, the drive east to Polonnaruwa, capital of the island from the 11th to 13th centuries.

Day 4 · Dambulla → Kandy

Cave Temples, Spices & the Hill Capital

🚗 Approx. 3 h with stops🛏️ Tour ends in Kandy

The last day heads south through the hills to Kandy, with the Temple of the Tooth in the evening. The tour ends at your Kandy hotel — or continue into the hill country, or back to Colombo, on request.

Seasonal Bonus

The Gathering at Minneriya

Each year in the dry season, the water in the great reservoir at Minneriya shrinks and fresh grass grows on the exposed shore. Wild elephants come from the surrounding forests to feed — sometimes in groups of a hundred or more.

Known simply as "The Gathering", it is one of the largest meetings of Asian elephants anywhere. A private jeep safari fits easily into Day 3 of this tour.

Wear comfortable shoes with grip — Sigiriya has around 1,200 steps and Pidurangala a rocky final section

Temples require covered shoulders and knees, and shoes are removed at the entrance — socks help on hot stone
