River safaris, coral reefs, a Dutch fort and whale watching — five easy days along Sri Lanka's palm-lined southern shore.
The southwest coast is where Sri Lanka slows down. This private tour works its way south from Bentota's river estuary to the reef at Hikkaduwa and the 17th-century walls of Galle Fort, then on to the bays of Unawatuna and Mirissa.
Drives are short, so every day leaves time on the sand. In season, a morning boat trip from Mirissa goes in search of blue whales and dolphins, and the tour finishes with an easy expressway run back to Colombo or the airport.

Each stop is less than an hour from the last — more beach time, less time on the road.

A wide golden beach where the Bentota river meets the ocean. Boat trips head up the river into mangroves and past small island temples.

A lively beach town with a shallow, protected reef right off the sand. Sea turtles often feed close to shore.

A walled sea fort first built by the Portuguese and rebuilt by the Dutch. Inside are cobbled streets, old churches, cafés and boutiques.

A curved, calm bay that is one of the best swimming beaches on the coast. The Japanese Peace Pagoda and Jungle Beach are close by.

Fishermen perched on wooden poles in the surf — a traditional method seen along this stretch. Weligama Bay next door is perfect for a first surf lesson.

A small, relaxed beach town with a palm-covered headland and the south coast's best-known whale-watching harbour.

Day 1 · Airport → Bentota
A private pickup and a quick run down the coast to Bentota, where a river meets the sea. The afternoon is split between the water and the beach.

Day 2 · Bentota → Hikkaduwa → Galle
South along the coast road to Hikkaduwa for a morning in the water, then on to Galle to walk the fort walls as the sun goes down.
Snorkelling or a glass-bottom boat over the reef; sea turtles are often seen close to shore.
Boutiques, cafés and colonial architecture inside the walls.
Walk the walls from the Clock Tower to the lighthouse.
Day 3 · Galle → Unawatuna → Mirissa
A slow day of short hops along the coast, ending on Mirissa's headland for sunset.

Day 4 · Mirissa
An early boat trip in season, then the rest of the day is yours — beach, pool or a surf lesson in the bay next door.
Blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins are seen in season (roughly November to April). Sightings are never guaranteed.

Day 5 · Mirissa → Colombo
A relaxed last morning on the beach before the Southern Expressway back to Colombo or straight to the airport for your flight. A short Colombo city tour can be added if time allows.

Just off Sri Lanka's southern tip, the continental shelf drops away into deep water close to shore. Blue whales — the largest animals on Earth — feed here, along with sperm whales and big pods of spinner dolphins.
Boats leave Mirissa harbour early in the morning and return around midday. Sea conditions are best from December to April; we recommend choosing a responsible operator that keeps a respectful distance from the whales.
